Tattoo Aftercare
Taking care of your new tattoo is key to proper healing and long-lasting color. Follow these steps carefully:
Standard Aftercare
- Remove bandage after 8 hours.
- Wash thoroughly with warm, soapy water (use only your hand, no washcloth).
- Rinse with cool water and firmly pat dry with a clean paper towel, and let the tattoo air dry briefly.
- For the first 3 nights:
- Before bed, apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor ointment.
- Re-wrap your tattoo with Saran wrap.
- Leave overnight, then repeat steps 1–3 each morning.
- After 3 days, apply small amount of non-scented lotion (Lubriderm) if needed up to 3 times a day.
Second Skin Method
- Remove bandage after 8 hours.
- Wash thoroughly with warm, soapy water (use only your hand, no washcloth).
- Rinse with cool water and firmly pat dry with a clean paper towel, and let the tattoo air dry briefly.
- Apply Tegaderm (or similar film dressing) over the tattoo, leaving about a 1-inch border around it. If using more than one piece, overlap by 1-inch.
- Leave the film on for 3–5 days. Shower as normal, but avoid soaking in baths, pools, or hot tubs.
- After removal of second skin, apply small amount of non-scented lotion (Lubriderm) if needed up to 3 times a day.
Things to know:
- Avoid working out, sweating, or soaking in water when using second skin. Sweat or water leakage will cause bacteria to grow.
- It’s normal to see fluid or ink under the bandage.
- To remove, peel gently under warm water.
- After removal, wash with mild soap, pat dry, and apply lotion daily until fully healed.
What to Expect
- Mild redness, swelling, and tenderness are normal for the first few days.
- Your tattoo may begin to flake or peel—this is a normal part of healing.
- Do not pick, scratch, or peel the tattoo.
Things to Avoid
- Do not submerge your tattoo in water (no baths, pools, lakes, or hot tubs) for at least 2 weeks.
- Avoid direct sunlight and tanning during the healing process.
- Do not wear tight or abrasive clothing over the tattoo.
- Avoid heavy sweating or intense workouts for the first few days.
